Self Report #3 - Teaching Assistanship & Immersion

Teaching Plan

3.1.  Curriculum
For Chemistry subjects, the curriculum used is the K-12 Science Curriculum.

3.2.  Teaching Plan Related to My Major
Overall, the K-12 science curriculum directs that learning in the classroom is not only in the form of concept planting, but is accompanied by an investigation to prove the concept. so that, from the concepts that already exist, students can relate them to daily life. To achieve the criteria desired by the curriculum, the lesson plan related to my major consists of the following items bellow :
a.  Learning Objectives
b.  Learning Concepts (Includes of Key Concepts, Learning Materials, References, and Processing Skills).
c. Learning Procedures (Includes of Daily Routine, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
d.  Learning Agreements.

Observation on Teacher(s)

August 7, 2018 after the orientation agenda with students was finished, we were directed to the Register’s Room to attend the mini orientation by the school principal. The school principal presents the history of USHS, the vision mission, and the school supporting system and announces assignments of classes to us. We also distributed tutor teachers as our cooperating teacher who will help us to prepare the material and everything we need to practice teaching in the classroom. And, The principal announced Sir Lexture R. Natividad as my cooperating teacher. He is an expert in Chemistry, so I’m so grateful because He would help and direct me to practice teaching in grade 10.

4.1.   Planning for teaching
As I said in the previous section, the teachers did not prepare the lesson plan in writing. If they make lesson plans in writing, the format is semi-detailed. The things that exist in the lesson plan are
a.  Learning Objectives, about the goals that students must achieve
b.  Learning Concepts, includes of Key Concepts, Learning Materials, References, and Processing Skills).
c. Learning Procedures, Includes of Daily Routine, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.
d.  Learning Agreements.

4.2.   Preparing Lessons and Materials
At the first meeting in the new school year, the teacher will provide an overview of the material that will be studied by students during the next semester, as well as inform the reference or book used. The book used was a chemical book entitled You and the Natural World by Estrella E.Mendoza and Teresita F.Religioso.

The topics for grade 10 consists of Introduction to Chemistry, Atomic Structure, Periodic System, Basic Law of Chemical Calculation, Behavior of Gases, Chemical Reactions, Hydrocarbons, Nomenclature of Compounds and Reaction Equations, Redox Reaction, Stoichiometry, and Chemical Bonding.

4.3.   Teaching in class

Teachers at USHS have good class management and time management when teaching. Because they only have 1 hour in each class to deliver material in the classroom, they use it for 1 hour very effectively. By following the steps in the lesson plan, the delivery of the material is carried out with 5 main steps, namely 5E Model of Instruction; Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

5E Model of Instruction

4.4    Measurement and Evaluation
At the end of the lesson, the teacher will provide evaluation questions to test students' understanding. Usually, the teacher will also provide projects or homework assignments individually or in groups. Based on DepEd Order No. 8 s. 2015, policy guidelines on classroom assessment for the k to 12 basic education program, the grade 10 students are grade on Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter that are given specific percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area. Because Chemistry subjects include in Science-Math area, so the percentages are 40% Written work, 40% Performance Tasks, and 20% Quarterly Assessment.
