Self Report #5 Summary & Suggestions

Alhamdulillah. Unceasing thanks. Thank you for the learning opportunities for me. This is the beginning. Never be satisfied and too proud of what you have obtained. Because indeed, humans are very limited beings, lacking in knowledge. Keep learning, always grateful.

6.1.   Purposes of Practicum

Accordance with the objectives of the SEA Teacher Project, to provide opportunity for pre-service student teachers from universities in Southeast Asia to have teaching experiences (practicum) in schools in other countries in Southeast Asia.  So the purposes of practicum are; to enable student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy, to encourage the student teachers to practice their English skills, and to allow student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view.

6.2.   Procedures of Practicum

The practicum procedure is divided into 4 steps. The first step is observation. Observation is an activity to review things in the school, ranging from general information about school, attitudes and behavior of students, academic support system, extracurricular activities of students, grading system, pedagogical system applied by the school, and teacher's method of teaching.

The second step is Teaching Assistant ship. Teaching Assistance is carried out with the cooperating teacher based on their respective subjects. The cooperating teacher will provide guidance and direction to teach in the classroom. This can be done by looking at the cooperating teacher's teaching process, exploring how the teacher provides material, methods used, time management and classroom management. The cooperating teacher will also assist in developing lesson plans. I can also consult about effective methods to attract students' attention. this process becomes one of the keys to success for our teaching practice.

The third step is Teaching Experience. This step is a very awaited thing and becomes the core activity of the practicum.

The fourth step is evaluation and reflection. Evaluation will be done once or twice during the implementation of teaching practice. Evaluations will be carried out by mentors and cooperating teachers. After being evaluated, the mentor and tutor teacher will reflect on the evaluation results to the participants. This is so that participants get feedback to improve and do better.

6.3.   Outcomes of Practicum

I learned many things from this program. Especially in developing communication skills, creativity provides an effective learning process in the classroom, how to approach students, and can learn the education system in the destination country. Besides that, I also study other cultures which are of course different from my country. I get many new friends from different cities and countries.

6.4.   The Challenges of Practicum

The Challenges during practice are language barrier. However, the Philippines is the third country that uses the most English, no wonder they can speak English fluently. In contrast to Indonesia, English is still something that is not familiar to the community. Especially the limitations of me who are not English students. Good English language skills are the main capital to see the world.

6.5.   Overall Impression

My impression during this program was very good. This is an extraordinary opportunity for me. I learned many things about the existing education system and culture. I am increasingly confident that I can be a good teacher (In syaa Allah). However, I still have to continue learning, I am increasingly motivated to improve my English skills, to better see opportunities and take learning opportunities abroad.

6.6.   Suggestions for Future Improvement

The suggestion for SEAMEO is to oversee the process in conducting the SEA Teacher program so that everything will be running smoothly and well. Besides that, it will be better if the other ASEAN countries can join the program.

The treatment from CLSU was beyond expectation. It was really satisfying. Everything went so well, even very well. The program was also well organized. The suggestion is, the university can provide information about schedules, especially if there is an art event schedule that invites participants to give an performance. In order to be prepared as well as possible.

The USHS welcomed us very well. I feel that I have become the part of this school. The facilities and the services are good an well organized. The suggestion for the school is to maintain the achievement of the students, the facilities and services from the school.
